Corporate Citizenship

As a global health care company, our vision of leading the way to a healthier world is the essence of our approach to corporate citizenship. In addition to contributing life saving medicines that address unmet medical needs, we continue to go beyond our business operations to act responsible in other areas around the globe.

"In response to the treat of a global avian influenza outbreak, Fort Dodge developed an important bivalent vaccine to prevent avian flu in poultry. In collaboration with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, Fort Dodge also is developing a reverse genetics poultry vaccine for protection against the H5N1 strain of the avian flu virus, which we are concerned about from a potential pandemic perspective"

Animals in research

The privilege of using animals in our research, product safety testing and, in some cases, drug manufacturing is a stewardship that we take very seriously. Within our R&D projects, experimental animals are used to the minimum extent necessary. Although non-animal research methods have contributed to reducing our animal use, the need for animal studies still exists. All animal care and use protocols at Wyeth and Fort Dodge Animal Health meet or exceed national regulations or guidelines. Highly trained professionals lead our programs and ensure appropriate management of animals used in product safety testing.

Third party certification

Wyeth and it's divisions encourages facilities to develop a robust Environmental, Health and Safety Performance ((EHS) management system and, wherever appropriate, to obtain certification. The process of seeking and achieving third party certification can solidify and strengthen a site's EHS program, significantly increase awareness throughout the site and sharpen the focus toward EHS excellence.

Our European facilities in Algete, Spain: Aprilia, Italy; Askeaton, Ireland; Catania, Italy; Newbridge, Ireland; and Weesp, Holland, are ISO 14001 certified. In addition, Askeaton and Newbridge are certified to both OHSAS 18001 and EMAS.

Land use and biodiversity

We support and implement projects that enhance the environment both at our facilities and in ecologically rich areas of the globe. Wyeth is a corporate member of the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), a nonprofit organization in the United states committed to wildlife habitat management and environmental education that helps to develop and maintain wildlife areas on corporate properties. WHC also certifies sites that meet its stringent requirements for habitat enhancement projects.

The Charles City, Iowa, Fort Dodge facility has dedicated about 50 acres of land to wildlife habitat enhancement projects. Projects include: a prairie restoration program, the Charles City Community High School partnership, and the planting of a butterfly garden by third grade students. In September 2006, the facility received WHC certification as a Corporate Lands for Learning site.
